Sculpture Saturday

This weekly challenge is hosted by Mind over Memory

This monument is dedicated to the women of the fishing community of Póvoa de Varzim in Northern Portugal.  It was created in 1997 by Jaime Azinheira.

An extract from Os Pescadores (1923) by Raul Brandão is engraved on the monument: dry on the body, they put their shoulders on the boats to throw them into the sea. Once fishing is over, all the work is up to the woman, who makes the grease, who takes care of her children, who makes nets, washes and repairs them, and who is going to sell these ways abroad.
