This popular Dublin landmark came about when Dublin City Council commissioned sculptor Tommy Craggs to work on a dying Monterey Cypress – thought to be about 200 years old.
UK born Craggs worked in forestry before moving into sculpture and has won numerous competitions and awards.
He created the 10 metre piece of art with a chainsaw and was inspired by local wildlife. The ‘Tree of Life’ starts with detailed carvings of sea creatures at the base, then woodland animals and finishes with birdlife at the top.

This has to be one of the most stunning sculptures that I have ever seen. For years, we used to live in Swords and St. Annes Park with its lovely farmers market was occasionally our little weekend gateway. Always gawked at the sculpture when passing by. Thanks for sharing and have a good day 😀 Aiva
Actually went to that market for the first time yesterday! I don’t really know the park – its huge!
The park is huge and it makes for a fun place to explore. It’s beautiful at any time of the year, but especially when the fall arrives. Years ago I used to work as a volunteer for the Irish Blue Cross, and we organised many charity events in the park for the dog owners. Have a lovely evening 😘
