10 Glimpses of Northern Portugal: 3.Lamego

Here’s another gorgeous town that is perfect for a short visit. Most people come for stairway but there’s also a nice old centre and impressive cathedral.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios

The church is lovely but the approaching staircase is the real star of the show. With 686 steps, its a bit of a challenge but you’ll be stopping to admire the construction and the landscape at each of the 9 terraces so just allow plenty of time and enjoy.

It doesn’t look too bad from the distance.

The woodland on either side enhances the effect…

At every level you will find works of art, sculptures, fountains, obelisks, azulejos and statues…

At first the view of the town is rather underwhelming…

The church is a major pilgrimage site. In September, pilgrims climb the steps to ask for miracles.

Once you’re back down in town, have a look around and enjoy lunch in one of the cafes around the main square which is laid out like a public garden.

I love the facade of the cathedral – especially the doorway…

Close by, the 18th century Bishop’s Palace now houses the municipal museum.

There’s a nice old town tucked in behind the main square.

And what have we here!! Brian Boru was a great High King of Ireland! I’m sure he’d be delighted to lend his name to yet another hotbed of Irish culture!
