This weekly challenge is hosted by Mind over Memory
This monument is dedicated to the women of the fishing community of Póvoa de Varzim in Northern Portugal. It was created in 1997 by Jaime Azinheira.
An extract from Os Pescadores (1923) by Raul Brandão is engraved on the monument: dry on the body, they put their shoulders on the boats to throw them into the sea. Once fishing is over, all the work is up to the woman, who makes the grease, who takes care of her children, who makes nets, washes and repairs them, and who is going to sell these ways abroad.

Wonderful monument. I love that the women look like me, and not like cosmetics models.
It shows it as it was doesn’t it… no airbrushing here!
I would want more than a monument after that amount of work. Wonderful images though
Life must have been so tough for those women…
Wonderful piece!
Its a nice tribute to the women I think. XXXMarie
Absolutely
It seems the female fisherfolk of every nation had the same hard life. Nice to have them recognised like this.
There are still women there selling fish on the quay. A hard existence…..
