Mothership by Rachel Joynt (1998).
The sea urchin looks as though it has just been tossed up out of the sea by a wave and landed on its side, leaving a trail of droplets….
The origins of the piece are a tad unglamorous – being commissioned through an open competition for the Dun Laoghaire Drainage Scheme! You can understand its appeal to a panel of judges – the stainless steel and bronze urchin represents a confident statement about the clear sea water made possible by the drainage scheme. And, cleverly, the sculptor made the piece in the same diameter as the tunnelling and pipe construction of the drainage system!!!
Located in Dun Laoghaire in south county Dublin, it is positioned to offer great views of the surrounding shoreline..
