LIGHT

This week’s theme from Debbie for One Word Sunday is LIGHT

An unsavoury gathering one thinks – a single torch in all that blackness… suspicious indeed!

We’re on the beach at Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve in Oman, observing the astonishing ritual of egg laying.    The turtle works through the night, burying her soft eggs in the sand and then spending hours covering them – moving sand around to mislead predators.

And then, at first light, when her work is done, she heads back out to sea….

  1. Oh you have a much better photo of the turtle covering the eggs than I managed to get here! When we reached the turtles the eggs were already buried so my shots are not only very dark but also don’t show the eggs, only sand!!

    1. We were very lucky because there weren’t many turtles on the beach that night…. so our timing was spot on…. its a great experience isn’t it….

      1. Yes amazing, although like you we didn’t see a lot of turtles – but we’d been warned we were outside the main season, so to see any was a great relief 🙂

  2. What a unique experience, especially knowing that many species of turtle are now critically endangered. I would love to get involved in conservation work counting the eggs and monitoring the turtles. Thanks for sharing and have a lovely evening, Marie 🙂 Aiva

    1. It was a great experience Aiva – the staff were very knowledgeable and appeared committed. I think you’d have to leave Sligo to fulfil that wish though!

    1. It was very special…. We didn’t even know about it until booking for the trip- all of which was done on the spur of the moment. It seemed to be one of those ‘must do’ things to do in Oman. It was a bit out of the way but really the best part of the whole trip.
