Loher Stone Fort, County Kerry, for Becky’s Geometric January!

The structure dates back to early Christian times. It would have been built as a defended farmstead with outer walls measuring over 2 metres in height. Within the walls you can see a large round house and a smaller rectangular building.

What a unique structure!
There are quite a few ancient buildings in that part of the country. Some are religious – tombs etc – but many are just homesteads.
That’s an interesting sight, and geometrical too!
It’s particularly attractive because it can be seen from the main road. And yes! Very geometric!
How fascinating! Maggie
It’s lovely isn’t it… Can’t have been very comfortable but probably luxurious compared to the surrounding peasants!
What a brilliant blend of geometry and history, Marie!
The contrast between the round house and rectangular building within those towering walls is as intriguing as it is timeless. Loher Stone Fort truly showcases the art of ancient Irish architecture—defense and design in perfect harmony.
Perfect for your “Geometric January!”
Thank you Michael – it’s a particularly fine specimen. I knew I was going to use it as soon as I saw the challenge!!!
Once again you’ve nailed a challenge. Apart from the geometric picture and thr geometry of the site, it’s a fascinating piece of history.
Another of our ‘Covid’ rediscoveries – I’d forgotten how many ancient buildings were in that part of the country….
A perfect structure for the challenge. Amazing that it has stood the test of time.
I’d say it’s had a bit of cosmetic surgery along the way but even so – it’s still a beauty!
