Delving into Bruges – her Street Corners

Once upon a time (as all the best stories go…) a traveler from Luxembourg was set upon and murdered on a narrow street in Bruges.   A local tradesman came upon him and the police found him cradling the dead man.  He was of course arrested and charged with the murder.

On the night before his execution,  he prayed in his prison cell for a miracle.   When he finally slept,  Our Lady and Baby Jesus appeared and gave him a letter which he was to give to the judge.   In the morning,  he was astonished to find a letter lying beside him on the floor.   He asked his jailer to give it to the judge who read the letter and acquitted the man.

Since then,  statues of Mary and Baby – sometimes with an ink pot – protect those who walk the streets of the city!
