CHALLENGE YOUR CAMERA; #12 ELEMENTAL

Each week, Dr. B from Buddha Walks into a Wine Bar selects a single theme to point our cameras at or to encourage us to display a few photos from our collections. I certainly don’t present myself as a photographer but I’m happy to root through my photos and select the most passable!!!

This week’s challenge (suggested by yours truly!) focuses on the four classical Greek elements – Air, Earth, Water, Fire.

There are lots of options with 2 or 3 combined: (but I’ve nothing with all 4)

Images coming from Sydney remind us of the destructive powers of the elements…

Sand Storm, Dubai (Earth)

We can represent the elements through everyday images…

and especially through art…..

Fire (Braga, Portugal)

Water (Dublin)

Earth (Fallen Tree Sculpture – Tuileries Garden, Paris)

Air – Even more cryptic than the one above!!!! This is Thus Daedalus Flew (Dublin) – Daedalus made wings from feathers and wax so that he and his son Icarus could flee Crete..

Finally – one (sad) representation of all four elements….

This beautiful piece in Dublin – the Tree of Life – includes animals of the sea, earth and air. And FIRE? Some yob went at it with accelerant and a match last summer – you can still see traces of the fire damage although the sculptor managed to repair most of it…

  1. Well done on proposing such an interesting theme! Not sure yet whether I’ll be able to contribute this week but I’ll certainly enjoy seeing what others post. You’re off to a great start here with such a varied selection. I like the look of that Daedelus sculpture 🙂

      I was lucky yo get the sculpture on its own – its placed on a very popular walking trail and beside a coffee shop so lots of people meet there – its usually really busy – even with covid – and nearly always someone posing at it or sitting on it….

  2. You’ve excelled yourself this week, Marie, and you’ve set the bar high. I’m still thinking about it and not sure if I’ve got anything in my collection that is even a little bit out of the ordinary. Lots of water, lots of earth, but fire? and air? Still, will keep on looking.
    Incidentally, is the Daedalus statue anything to do with James Joyce (Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man – Stephen Deadalus)?

      Yes it celebrates both the mythical figure and Joyce – the local council blurb states that ‘ the piece has many layers of meaning and is concerned with man’s quest to fly at every level, physical, mental and spiritual’ …… So say that 3 times quickly after a few glasses of vino!!!

  5. We’re going round in circles here! When I said I meant ‘Finnegan’s Wake’, I meant instead of ‘Ulysses’ which was my comment in ref to your remark about reading your sentence after a couple of glasses … ah, forget it! just hate you to think I didn’t know my HCE from my Bloom!
