A PHOTO CHALLENGE OF PLACES WE SIT…OR MIGHT SIT…OR ART ABOUT SITTING

In 1170, Richard de Clare, Earl of Striguil – better known as Strongbow – arrived in Ireland with an army of Anglo-Norman knights and mercenaries. He was here to help the ousted King of Leinster – Dermot McMurrough – regain his kingdom. In exchange, Strongbow was promised the hand of Dermot’s beautiful daughter Aoife and succession to the kingdom.
This 8ft cast bronze piece in Waterford City commemorates the wedding. A lot of attention was paid to their medieval dress and jewellery. Strongbow is holding the mace and chain in one hand – symbols of war – and a scroll in the other, symbolizing the agreement between himself and his new father-in-law!
The commissioning brief was for a piece that would encourage public interaction and provide photo opportunities so it’s perfectly acceptable to sit on their laps!

Oh my goodness! what fun seats!
They are aren’t they! And I got a clear shot – covid of course – usually crowds around the place….
They remind me of chess pieces!
Absolutely!! I could easily imagine a full chess board right there on the square!
Yes. I’ve always hankered for a Lewis chess set. Few years back my husband bought me the moulds, etc to create my own. Such fun painting them to give each a character.
Well isn’t that a lovely thoughtful gift!! There’s a lot of work in creating a full chess set!!
It was sooo worth it. I especially love the berserkers. x
Obviously well sat on as one can see from the burnished seat, so they fulfilled the brief very well.
They sure did … it’s a lovely part of Waterford so usually full of visitors of course…
Wow, that is so nice!
Thank you!!!
Fabulous statues..very statuesque!
Elegant aren’t they – regal I suppose….
Love these, they are so unique.
And they suit Waterford’s historical centre perfectly…
They do indeed!
Yet more inspiration from you on what to look for on our next visit. Thank you. x
