PULL UP A SEAT PHOTO CHALLENGE 2021: #25

A PHOTO CHALLENGE OF PLACES WE SIT…OR MIGHT SIT…OR ART ABOUT SITTING

In 1170, Richard de Clare, Earl of Striguil – better known as Strongbow – arrived in Ireland with an army of Anglo-Norman knights and mercenaries. He was here to help the ousted King of Leinster – Dermot McMurrough – regain his kingdom. In exchange, Strongbow was promised the hand of Dermot’s beautiful daughter Aoife and succession to the kingdom.

This 8ft cast bronze piece in Waterford City commemorates the wedding. A lot of attention was paid to their medieval dress and jewellery. Strongbow is holding the mace and chain in one hand – symbols of war – and a scroll in the other, symbolizing the agreement between himself and his new father-in-law!

The commissioning brief was for a piece that would encourage public interaction and provide photo opportunities so it’s perfectly acceptable to sit on their laps!

    1. Yes. I’ve always hankered for a Lewis chess set. Few years back my husband bought me the moulds, etc to create my own. Such fun painting them to give each a character.

      1. Well isn’t that a lovely thoughtful gift!! There’s a lot of work in creating a full chess set!!

      1. It would be so long by now. I just put all your posts in a folders ready to go through when the planning starts in earnest. As long as the great PC gods in the sky don’t decide to down tools. 😉
