How wonderful! We saw a turtle there covering her nest but were too late to see the actual laying. We also saw a cute hatchling but I would have loved to see this!

cool — this is something I have never seen
An extraordinary story – only about 2 in every 1000 eggs make it to adulthood. When the babies hatch and and make their way to the ocean, the males never return but the females reappear after about 26 YEARS to lay their eggs on the same beach!
26 years! And what a dismal rate of success 2 in 1000.
Very few of them actually make it across to the water even. The night we were there, the whole shoreline was lined with crabs ready to pounce!
