I prefer the native hedgerows, too, Marie. Especially as the early flowering Willow and Blackthorn fade, we are now being treated to an abundance of Hawthorn blossom. It’s a sure sign that spring is turning into summer.
This is such a lovely time of year around the country Aiva – the hedgerows look beautiful around the fields…
I’m a hedgerow fan too. I admire the fancy hedges but feel relaxed and at home with our flourishing hedgerows
Its only when we’re away that we realise how much we take them for granted….
Those native ones with the yellow flowers are so iconic to the “image” of Ireland.
It’s wonderful – and it flowers for so much of the year….
I love hedges, look looking at them and painting but I dont ever want to have to be in charge of cutting one!
Ah Emma – my dad (a Donegal man and so far from hedges was he reared!!!) loved his pruned hedges – we didn’t have a big garden in Dublin but he’d hedges on all sides and was SO proud of them. When I bought my own house, he was devastated that we weren’t planting any – he couldn’t understand it!
Oh your poor dad! They are so environmentally friendly too. People spend so much time on their gardens in Donegal. I am always impressed/amazed that people have such tidy gardens when they are surrounded by blanket bog!
I know!!! Looks all wrong – I prefer the bog!!!
Me too, but my neighbours like the very clipped version of lawns and hedges.
