A PHOTO CHALLENGE OF PLACES WE SIT…OR MIGHT SIT…OR ART ABOUT SITTING

This is a set of prisoner weighing scales in Spike Island Prison, Cork, Ireland. Dating from the late 1800’s, they represent a shift in penal policy towards reform rather than punishment. Prisoners were weighed upon arrival and again when they were being discharged to ensure they hadn’t experienced excessive weight loss during their incarceration.

Thank you Mari! I was delighted when I came across it …. goes to show! – never delete anything!!!
You would have to be a fantastic swimmer to escape the prison and make it to Cobh. Did you guys had a great time on the Spike Island?
Very impressed! Much bigger than expected and very interesting…and lovely views of Cobh…. well worth a visit.
